Another FICS Loss

ToddvsDntltek20080721.pgn

So far on FICS I'm W-0, D-1, L-2. I'd have a win instead of a draw except that I forgot how to checkmate with Queen and King vs. King, so purposely stalemated with a couple seconds left on the clock to avoid a loss due to time controls. Don't worry, though, I have since re-learned how to checkmate with a Queen and King (essentially a backrank mate) and no longer play quick 10-minute games.

I can't believe I missed 13.Bxb5+, winning a Queen for a Bishop! I saw it RIGHT after I moved (naturally), and then hoped to at least win my pawn back with the same discovered attack on his Queen after 14.Rd1. But, alas, it was not to be so. On the plus side, I very intentionally tried to stay away from a defeated attitude and continued to battle until the bitter end, although I did continue to make a number of blunders...such as dropping my Queen.

Sure, you can borrow my goal of no 1-2 move blunders! 13.Qf3?? - Ouch, you had him. And yeah, 14.Qf4 was kinda the end of things. Oh well, it's a learning process and playing stronger opponent is definitely the way to learn. :)

I don't play 10+0 either. I like to play with a small increment (for example, 15+5) so that the outcome is always decided by who plays better chess (granted, under time pressure) rather than wood-pushing or mouse speed.

Hi Todd, just wanted to let you know I've gotten around to adding your link at my blog--you're doing good work here, keep it up!

likesforests, I know...it was one of those "Can I just travel back in time 5 seconds?" moments. Oh well, at least the person was really nice and helped me figure out how to get the moves saved and emailed to myself. I don't mind losing to people with a friendly attitude as much.

wahrheit, thanks again for the link and the introduction, I really appreciate it! Also the compliment, I'm trying to keep the blog entertaining. Like I said, when I stop being so terrible I might head over to Reno and enter a tourney, I'm guessing they have a lot.

If your opponent only has a king left and you flag it's going to be a draw because he has no mating material. Somebody can not win a game on time if there is not mating material. Now if he had a pawn, that's considered mating material and he would win on time.

You're kidding me?? I thought if someone's clock ran out they lost no matter what! That is good information to have, thanks a bunch Polly! :-)
